Treaties with the crown

Who Signed Our Treaty

RRAN is a Treaty 1 Nation. Our leaders signed a Treaty with the King of England (the Crown) on August 3, 1871. Treaty 1 was the first of the numbered treaties signed by the Crown and Nations across Turtle Island. The Treaty was between two sovereign nations. Our Treaty was not an agreement of surrender but one of sharing in harmony  as long as "the sun shines, the grass grows, and rivers flow".

The Treaties were intended to create harmony between our people and Europeans who were arriving in the Pembina Valley.

What Did Our Treaty Mean

When we signed our Treaty, we agreed to share our land while retaining our sovereignty and our rights to protect our nationhood and our way of life. In exchange, the Crown promised to provide our people with education, healthcare, shelter, more lands when needed and the means to sustain our communities.
